Totnes Pound Update October 2008

Changes to the team

The Totnes Pound has to say a huge Thank You to Noel Longhurst for the considerable efforts he has made, and the time he has put in, for the Totnes Pound project. Unfortunately Noel has now moved away from Totnes for personal reasons but he is very keen to keep up to date with developments.

New volunteers

Thankfully, given Noel’s departure, we have recently received some offers of help from new volunteers so we are in a good position to continue Noel’s work and progress the exciting plans being developed to move the project forward. Mark Burton will now be the main contact point for the Totnes Pound. With a keen interest in the money system and how we can develop local economies, Mark is looking forward to getting involved in the practical running of the Totnes Pound.

Of course we will always welcome new volunteers, there is much to do. Please get in touch if you are interested in helping, any commitment no matter how small would benefit the project.

New Business!

Great news that we have another business on board supporting the Totnes Pound.

The Albert Inn, in Bridgetown is now accepting Totnes Pounds and is very enthusiastic about being part of the project.

Are you using the Totnes Pound?

Now is the time! As the country heads into recession the benefits of local currencies can really be felt. Keeping money within the community becomes even more important at making the local economy resilient. Most local currencies around the world have been successful mainly in times of wider economic recession. Here in Totnes we are lucky to have an established local currency already in place, making us well prepared for the difficult economic times unfolding.

We have all been able to see in recent weeks how susceptible we are to changes in the far away money markets. The sense of keeping money more local becomes more obvious. To support this increasingly valuable initiative please always keep some Totnes Pounds with you and keep your eye out for the new window stickers in participating businesses. For a full list of businesses accepting the Totnes Pound click here, and don’t forget about the many discounts on offer for using Totnes Pounds. River Link are offering a discount on boat trips to Dartmouth. Discounts are also available at Salago, Indian Connection and Prismatic. Don’t forget that you can also pick up a copy of the A Celebration of Local Food 2008 from many outlets around town from the bargain price of one Totnes Pound.
