Transition Planting Weekend
Tree planting weekend - volunteers needed!
Higher Druid is 22 beautiful acres of land above Ashburton consisting of 7 acres of mature mainly beech wood, 10 acres being planted to new native woodland under the Forestry Commission Woodland Creation Grant Scheme and 3 smaller fields that will be planted with a mixture of coppice and standard and woody shrubs for the future harvest of timber, fuel and non-timber forest products.
The aim of this small-scale forestry enterprise is to revitalise the local production of traditional forest products, raw materials and rural crafts by increasing the biodiversity of the woodland to create future benefits and resilience for the local community.
We are looking to involve the local community in this project and have the support of the Ashburton Futures Trees and Orchards group. As we have nearly 4,000 trees to plant by the end of march, we are trying to find as many volunteers as possible to come and help. So we are organising a 'Transition Planting Weekend' on Sat/Sun 20th and 21st Febuary and inviting Dartmoor Circle Groups and all local Transition groups from Totnes, South Brent, Buckfastleigh, Ashburton, Newton Abbot and Bovey Tracey to come together and plant trees and get to know each other.
The planting will take place over two days and everyone is welcome to come for any length of time from 10am-4pm. Please bring stout footwear, waterproofs, a narrow spade and packed lunch - hot drinks and cake will be provided.
There is limited parking....please arrange lift shares - and an idea of numbers of people coming would be appreciated - contact Pam on 01364 642893 or 07973 412681
Directions: From the end of North Street Ashburton, bear left over the bridge onto the B3357, signposted Buckland-in- the Moor and Widecombe. Keep going up the hill for roughly 1
miles until you see a beech wood on the right just past Highgrove house.
The entrance track onto the land is halfway up on the right. If you reach a turning on the right to Widecombe – you’ve gone too far!
