Sustainable Fish Project

Overview

This exciting new project has been launched in Totnes by Caroline Bennett, owner of the award winning restaurant group Moshi Moshi. She and fisheries scientist Dr Malcolm MacGarvin have set up the Responsible Fish Restaurant initiative. Caroline, whose family live here, felt that with the area being adjacent to important fishing grounds, its open minded culture and vibrant local food scene, Totnes was the  natural place to extend the pilot that she has successfully launched in London. The aim of this restaurant led initiative is to improve the sustainability of fisheries by creating buyer driven pressure for change. They do this by  going out on local boats to see how the fish are caught,  talking to the fishermen about methods that have less impact on the marine environment and rebuild fish stocks. Better practice also means the quality of the fish is improved. They get chefs to look at fish by category rather than species, and  help them to source locally by putting them in touch with the fishermen they have been out with. Look out for the RFR logo on local menus. Find out more at http://www.pisces-rfr.org
